About Olga Silverman

Olga Silverman A FEW WORDS ABOUT ME:

Thank you for taking the time to look at my work.

Born in New York City in 1940, I grew up in the Bronx and was always interested in drawing. In 1971, when the company I worked for offered a class in oil painting, I jumped at the opportunity to learn. From that time on, I was hooked.

Needing to work for a living, I spent six years working as a graphic artist for the training division of a bank, preparing illustrations, charts, etc. for their teaching materials. Over the years, I have done freelance work, creating newsletters, brochures, manuals and advertising for various organizations.

When a friend showed me some of her pen & ink drawings, I decided to try my hand at it and thought I would create of few of my own drawings. I started my pen & ink work in black and white, using black India ink or sepia, then began to add color. I concentrated on these drawings for several years, accepting commissions for house drawings, portraits of people and pets.

As I continued to work fulltime for various companies, my painting time was limited and I found myself doing less and less of my favorite pastime. At this point in my life, having recently retired, I have gone back to my artwork and have not stopped yet.

Over the years, I have exhibited some of my paintings and drawings at the Mystic Outdoor Art Festival, the Brooklyn Heights Promenade Art Show, the Great Neck Library, the Sea Cliff Arts & Crafts Show and the National Art League.

I enjoy depicting people at work and play, as well as painting still lifes and landscapes. While I sometimes paint from life, I usually work from photographs because that allows me to concentrate on the details of a picture without worrying about the changing light or weather conditions. I have a room in my home which I use as a painting studio, thanks to my husband, who created an enclosed area for my easel and my many tools, safely hidden away from our cats.
